How to hand off a sales deal without losing momentum

Hand off a sales opportunity without losing buyer context, ownership, commitments, or the next action.

Why this matters

When a founder hands a deal to a teammate, the buyer should not have to repeat everything they already explained.

A useful handoff is more than changing the owner field. It gives the new owner enough context to take the next step confidently.

Capture the essentials

Record the buyer’s goal, the people involved, what has been discussed, any concerns still open, and commitments your team has made. Keep facts separate from your assumptions about the buyer.

Make the next action explicit

Write down who will contact the buyer, why, and when. “Take over account” leaves too much to interpretation. “Send the revised scope to Jordan by Thursday” gives the new owner something they can do.

Introduce the new owner

If the buyer has been speaking with one person, tell them who will take over and what that person already knows. A brief introduction makes the change feel coordinated rather than abrupt.

Check the record after the handoff

Confirm that ownership, tasks, stage, and close date reflect the current situation. Then let the new owner run the conversation rather than continuing to direct it through private messages.

RevenueRobotics keeps people, companies, deals, and tasks in a shared workspace so the next action can stay with the opportunity.
