A lead is not always a deal

Learn when a contact should become a sales opportunity and how to keep your pipeline from filling with unqualified names.

Why this matters

A person expressing interest is useful to know about. It does not always mean you have an active sales opportunity.

Keeping that distinction clear makes your pipeline easier to work and your forecast less misleading.

A lead is someone worth learning more about

You may know their name, company, and possible need, but still need to confirm whether there is a relevant project or a reason to speak.

A deal represents a specific potential sale

Create or advance a deal when you have enough information to describe the opportunity: what the buyer may purchase, why, and what happens next. Your team can choose its own qualification threshold, but everyone should use it consistently.

Do not inflate the pipeline

If every newsletter signup or casual introduction becomes an open deal, the pipeline total stops telling you much. Keep early interest visible without counting it as near-term revenue.

Revisit the decision as you learn

A lead may become a deal after a discovery conversation. An open deal may return to a less active state if the project is postponed. Update the CRM to reflect what you know now.

RevenueRobotics gives you records for people, companies, and deals, so you can keep the relationship without treating every contact as an active opportunity.
